Talking about Paper Mache, it is a French word for “chewed
paper”. This art was bought by Persians in the 15th century and very
soon was adopted by the locals.
The Kashmiri items are primarily made of paper pulp and is
beautifully decorated with rich, bright and colourful paints. It is a long
process where waste paper, cloth, straw of rice plant are recycled and transformed
into stunning products like jewellery boxes, decorative items, flower vases,
pen holders, bowls, trays and more and is hand painted by the skilful artisans
of Kashmir. The whole process of Paper Mache includes 2 steps.
1) Sakhtsazi i.e. the actual making of the item and
2) Naqashi i.e. when the product is painted with beautiful
and bright colors. This whole process involves lots of hard work and labour.
