Variety Of Patterns, Designs and Colors

Pashmina! A well-known name in the handicraft industry and I am pretty sure you are not new to the word. The name comes from a Persian word pašmina meaning made from wool. Pashmina also called as ‘Cashmere’ in the west is a fine type of soft and warm wool. The wool used in making of Pashmina products is got from a special kind of breed of goats known as Chyangra and is found in the areas where temperature drops below -40 degrees Centigrade. The Pashmina products are so warm and are best suited for very cold climate.

Earlier it was used only by the kings and queens of Kashmir or by the other royal people and this lead to setting up of cottage industries involving manufacturing of Pashmina products. The craft has seen many ups and downs and finally it has made a very special and important place in the industry of handicrafts.

Ranges From Bright to Subtle colours
The process of making Pashmina products is a very lengthy and laborious process for even a simple plain shawl or a scarf and involves approximately 200 – 300 man hours.
The whole process starts in the season of Spring when Chyangra goat sheds its inner coat which is collected and send over to the local manufacturers where everything is hand processed. From Combing i.e. removing the impurities, to spinning and weaving.

Spinning is done with hands on a spinning wheel called Charkha and it a very tedious and lengthy process and must be done in a specific manner and if spinning is not carried out in a defined manner it might affect the quality of the product. And the last process is weaving, which is an art by itself as it involves very intricate details and embroidery. Every process is carried out by the hands and thus, it takes about a week to get a shawl ready.

Initially, the product was used by people to protect themselves from the biting cold but now Pashmina products have become very popular and commercially known. The most common Pashmina products are shawls, scarves, mufflers, stoles, sweaters and more. Designs and patterns have a very royal touch of colors giving it a distinguished yet an elegant look.

These Are Intricate Designs Handmade By The Artisans
Demand of Pashmina products in international market is huge and so are the prices. Since entire manufacturing process is done by hands, prices vary according to the work done on a product. Lot of intricate designs are made with eye-catching colours and patterns. Printed shawls gives a touch of royalty to the product and looks sunning on indian as well as on western wear like jeans and long dresses.
